RPI Acquires Technology To Connect Mobile Photography & Physical Printing

This investment is the first piece in a larger strategy for RPI that blends technology with RPI’s unique private label global distribution and manufacturing capabilities to create a frictionless path between mobile devices and printed products.

Some significant news came out of Mobile Photo Connect 2015 yesterday in San Francisco, not the least of which was RPI’s announcement that it has made an investment in the server and application technology from Kindred, a Bay Area company, that will enable frictionless connections between mobile photography and physical printing.

This investment is the first piece in a larger strategy for RPI that blends technology with RPI’s unique private label global distribution and manufacturing capabilities to create a frictionless path between mobile devices and printed products.

Two important things to note:

First, this is a business-to-business strategy for RPI that will enable the company to provide white label products for its partners. It is not a consumer play, and RPI won’t be competing with current or future partners who have similar consumer products in the market.

Second, RPI did not acquire Kindred’s parent company, but only the technology behind the current Kindred application. This technology will serve as a platform from which to develop additional software tools connecting mobile photography and physical printing.

This combination of technology and global infrastructure uniquely positions RPI to help its partners take advantage of growing global mobile opportunities. The popularity of digital photography and photo sharing continues to grow – 1.8-billion digital images are shared daily worldwide, and there are more than 80,000 photo apps available. Mobile is key, but there’s a renewed interest in context-rich photo stories delivered in both digital and physical forms, and this unique union of technology and physical printing offered by RPI opens new avenues for marketing, advertising and loyalty plays as well.
